System Setup : Configuring Pro Tools | First System Settings : Playback Engine

Playback Engine
Playback Engine dialog
In the Playback Engine dialog, Pro Tools | First lets you select the audio engine for use with your audio interface.
Changing the Playback Engine setting can be useful if you have multiple audio interfaces connected to your computer with different routing configurations in your studio.
To select which audio engine Pro Tools uses:
1. Choose Setup > Playback Engine.
2. From the Playback Engine selector, select your audio interface.
3. If you have an audio interface with more than two outputs, select the desired physical stereo output pair on your audio interface (this will be the default output used by new tracks in your project) from the Default Output selector.
4. If no project is currently open, you can set the sample rate using the Sample Rate selector. If a project is currently open, the Sample Rate selector displays the project sample rate.
5. Select either the Record or the Playback option to optimize Pro Tools | First for recording or playback.
6. Click OK.
When changing the Playback Engine with a project open, Pro Tools | First closes and reopens the project to initialize the new playback engine.
